Juju Densetsu, famously known outside Japan as Toki, is a 1989 arcade run-and-gun platformer originally developed by TAD Corporation. You play as an athletic warrior who gets transformed into a slow-moving ape by the evil wizard Vookimedlo, embarking on a quest to rescue Princess Miho. Unlike most frantic action platformers of its era, this game is defined by its methodical pacing. As an ape, you cannot move quickly, forcing you to carefully plan your jumps and rely on shooting energy balls from your mouth to take out bizarre enemies. This specific version is an unofficial Playmark bootleg of the original arcade release.
How to play
Your goal is to reach the end of each stage, defeat the bosses, and ultimately rescue Miho. To get started in the browser emulator, press Shift to insert a coin and Enter to start. Use the arrow keys to move and crouch, and press Z and X to jump and spit energy balls at enemies.
Tips
- Your slow movement speed means you cannot easily dodge fast projectiles on reaction; prioritize memorizing enemy spawn patterns and taking them out before they have a chance to attack.
- Take advantage of the jumping mechanic. You can bounce off certain enemies to reach higher platforms or avoid hazards, but be careful not to jump recklessly into danger.
- Look out for power-ups scattered throughout the levels. Upgrading your spit attack to a spread shot or a powerful continuous beam is crucial for surviving the later, more crowded stages.
