Released in 1991, JuJu Densetsu (known as Toki in the West) is an action-platformer for the Famicom/NES where you play as a warrior transformed into an ape by an evil sorcerer. To rescue his kidnapped girlfriend Miho and regain his human form, JuJu must battle through hazardous stages by spitting powerful energy projectiles at enemies. Unlike its notoriously difficult arcade counterpart, this NES port features a health bar, making it slightly more forgiving.
How to Play
Use the Arrow Keys (D-Pad) to move, duck, and aim your shots in various directions. Press Z (A Button) to jump and X (B Button) to spit projectiles at your foes. Press Enter (Start) to pause the game. Your goal is to traverse each stage while collecting power-ups like football helmets for protection and special shoes to boost your jumping ability.
Tips
- Take advantage of your ability to shoot diagonally and directly upward to clear out enemies safely from below before climbing vines or ladders.
- Keep an eye out for the football helmet power-up, which acts as a shield to absorb enemy hits.
- Since the NES version gives you a health bar, don’t be afraid to take a minor hit if it helps you secure a better position against difficult bosses.
