Game description:

John Romero’s Daikatana is a first-person shooter released for the Nintendo 64 in 2000. Developed by Ion Storm and published by Kemco for the console, the game follows martial artist Hiro Miyamoto on a time-traveling quest to retrieve a powerful, magical sword. Unlike the PC release, this N64 adaptation removes the AI sidekicks entirely, transforming the journey into a traditional solo shooter that spans four distinct eras: futuristic Japan, ancient Greece, the Dark Ages of Norway, and near-future San Francisco.

How to Play

Navigate complex, labyrinthine levels, solve environmental puzzles, and battle era-specific enemies using a unique arsenal of weapons that changes with every time period. In the browser emulator, the default Nintendo 64 controls map the analog stick to the arrow keys, A and B to X and C, and the C-buttons (used for strafing and aiming) to A, S, D, and W. Use Enter for Start.

Tips

  • Watch for ricochets: Weapons like the Ion Blaster in the first episode fire projectiles that bounce off walls. Use this to shoot around corners, but be careful not to catch yourself in the crossfire.
  • Manage your health: Without AI companions to revive or heal you in this version, health pickups are your only lifeline. Memorize medkit locations and backtrack to them before tough encounters.
