Game description:

Released in 1997 by Nintendo, Yoshi Story (Japan) is a vibrant side-scrolling platformer for the Nintendo 64. Taking place in a pop-up storybook world, players control a group of colorful Yoshis on a quest to defeat Baby Bowser and restore the stolen Super Happy Tree. The game features a unique progression system where levels are completed by eating 30 pieces of fruit rather than reaching a traditional exit, all complemented by a charming hand-drawn art style and an iconic soundtrack.

How to Play

Your objective is to explore the storybook pages, eating 30 fruits to complete each level. You can jump and flutter jump to cross gaps, use Yoshi’s tongue to eat enemies and turn them into eggs, and throw those eggs to hit distant targets. For browser play, map your keyboard to the N64’s analog stick for movement, the A button for jumping, the B button for eating, and the Z trigger for throwing eggs.

Tips

  • Eating a Yoshi’s favorite fruit (which matches their color) or a Lucky Fruit restores more health and awards extra points.
  • To maximize your score and unlock the best ending, try to seek out the 30 hidden melons in each level rather than eating the first fruits you see.
  • If your health meter depletes, your current Yoshi will be captured, but you can rescue them later by finding and keeping a White Shy Guy.
