Game description:

Developed by Papyrus Design Group and published by Electronic Arts in 1989, Indianapolis 500: The Simulation is a landmark DOS racing game that redefined the genre by introducing realistic physics and car telemetry to home computers. Rather than a simple arcade racer, it is a detailed simulation of the iconic Indy 500 event, challenging players to qualify, tune their vehicles, and compete against a field of 32 AI drivers in a grueling 200-lap race.

How to play

Your objective is to qualify for a starting position and win the 500-mile race at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway. Success requires careful car setup, managing tire wear, monitoring fuel consumption, and mastering the racing line. The game is controlled using standard DOS inputs, typically relying on the arrow keys or numeric keypad for steering, acceleration, and braking. Smooth inputs are essential, as the realistic physics model will punish sudden jerks of the steering wheel.

Tips

  • Car setup is crucial: Don’t rely solely on the default setup. Adjust your wing angles, tire pressures, and gear ratios to find a balance between top speed on the straights and stability in the corners.
  • Smooth driving saves tires: Pushing too hard will overheat and wear out your right-side tires quickly. Listen to the sound of the tires; squealing means you are scrubbing speed and wearing them down.
  • Drafting: Use the slipstream of the cars ahead to gain speed on the long straights, but be prepared for the sudden loss of downforce when you pull out to pass.
