Altered Beast is SEGA’s 1988 beat ’em up, ported to DOS from the original arcade release. You play as a centurion summoned back to life by Zeus and sent to fight through five underworld stages to rescue Athena. The defining mechanic is the spirit power-up: white wolves carry glowing orbs, and collecting three in a stage triggers an automatic transformation — your centurion becomes a werewolf, weredragon, werebear, weretiger, or golden werewolf, one beast per stage.
How to play
The DOS version uses standard MS-DOS keyboard controls. Work through waves of undead enemies while hunting the white wolves for their spirit orbs. Picking up one or two orbs strengthens your human form; the third forces an immediate beast transformation. Boss fights at the end of each stage can only be won in beast form, so reach the boss with all three orbs collected.
Tips
- White wolves are the only source of spirit orbs — prioritise them over all other enemies until you have three.
- Beast form is dramatically more powerful than human form; use it aggressively on the boss rather than holding back.
- In two-player mode each centurion transforms independently, so both players need their own three orbs before the boss.
