Hudson’s Adventure Island IV is a 1994 action platformer for the NES developed by Hudson Soft. As the final official release for the console in Japan, it abandons the linear arcade-style levels of its predecessors in favor of a sprawling, interconnected world. You guide Master Higgins on a non-linear adventure to rescue his kidnapped dinosaur friends, collecting new weapons and tools that open up previously inaccessible areas along the way.
How to play
Your objective is to explore the island, defeat bosses to rescue your friends, and find items that expand your abilities. You are no longer fighting a constantly depleting hunger timer; instead, you have a standard health meter that can be refilled with fruit and expanded with hidden heart containers. Use the arrow keys to move, Z to attack or use an equipped tool, and X to jump. Press Enter (Start) to open your inventory and switch between the weapons and animal friends you have unlocked.
Tips
- Use the compass: If you are unsure where to go next in the hub world, equip the compass item to point you toward the entrance of your next objective.
- Revisit past areas: Whenever you acquire a new tool like the hammer or water gun, backtrack to previous locations. They are often the key to breaking obstacles and uncovering hidden heart containers or alternate routes.
- Manage your inventory: Some bosses are much easier if you switch from your default bone to a weapon whose attack pattern better matches the boss’s movements.
