Game description:

Frankenstein – The Monster Returns is a side-scrolling action platformer released for the NES in 1991 by Bandai. Players take on the role of a heroic swordsman on a perilous quest to rescue the village maiden Emily and defeat Frankenstein’s Monster, who has risen from the grave to unleash an army of supernatural creatures upon the world.

How to Play

Battle your way through linear stages using a mix of martial arts and discoverable weapons to defeat enemies and stage bosses. Keep an eye out for secret doors that can lead to health and power-ups.

  • D-pad / Arrow Keys: Move or duck
  • A / Z or X: Jump (Press twice for a jump kick)
  • B / X or Z: Attack or use weapon
  • Up + B: Use special ability (e.g., throw bombs)
  • Down: Pick up items (Stand directly over them to collect)
  • Select / Shift: Use stored Life items to heal

Tips

  • Prioritize defense: Weapon upgrades act similarly to the original Zelda game; taking damage will cause you to lose your current weapon power level and revert to weaker attacks.
  • Master the jump kick: Double-tapping the jump button unleashes a flying kick. This move is incredibly effective against airborne bosses and often lets you pass safely through their hitboxes.
  • Save your healing items: Life items can be stored in your inventory and carried across stages. Wait to press Select until you absolutely need the health.
