Game description:

Fantasy Zone is a classic, colorful cute ’em up side-scrolling shooter released for the NES in 1989. Taking control of the sentient spaceship Opa-Opa, players navigate vibrant pastel worlds rather than the dark, gritty settings typical of the genre. Originally an arcade hit by Sega, this unlicensed Tengen release brings the iconic shop-based upgrade system and free-scrolling action to the Nintendo Entertainment System.

How to Play

The objective is to destroy all the enemy bases scattered across each horizontally scrolling stage to summon the level’s boss. You can freely fly left or right, and defeated enemies drop coins to collect. Use the Arrow Keys to move Opa-Opa, Z to fire your main weapon, X to drop bombs, and Enter to start or pause the game. Look out for the red shop balloon to spend your coins on engine upgrades and better weapons.

Tips

  • Upgrades like the 7-Way Shot or Laser are incredibly powerful but have a limited time or ammo count, so buy them right before facing a tough boss.
  • The Twin Bombs are an excellent permanent upgrade to grab early, allowing you to deal significant damage to ground targets and bases.
  • Always prioritize buying the Big Wings or Jet Engine as your first purchase; Opa-Opa’s default speed is dangerously slow.
