Game description:

Fantasy Zone (Japan) is a colorful side-scrolling shooter originally released by Sega and ported to the NES by Sunsoft. Often credited as pioneering the “cute ’em up” genre, you pilot the sentient spaceship Opa-Opa to defend the pastel-colored Fantasy Zone from alien invaders. Unlike traditional auto-scrolling shooters, the game gives you full freedom to fly left or right at your own pace to destroy enemy bases.

How to play

Your main objective is to clear every enemy generator in the stage to trigger a boss battle. Defeated enemies and bases drop coins, which you can spend on upgraded weapons, bombs, and engines by flying into the shop balloons that periodically appear. Use the arrow keys to navigate, press Z to shoot your primary weapon, and X to drop bombs. Use Enter to start the game.

Tips

  • Upgrade your speed early: Opa-Opa moves very slowly by default. Buying an engine upgrade like the Big Wings or Jet Engine should be your first priority.
  • Save powerful weapons for bosses: Special weapons like the 7-Way Shot or Laser are strictly time-limited. Try to purchase them right before a boss fight rather than wasting them on regular enemies.
  • Catch the falling coins: Higher value coins fall faster, so be ready to dive and collect your earnings before they disappear off the bottom of the screen.
