Fantasy Zone is a colourful horizontal shooter developed and published by Sega for the NES in 1986. You pilot Opa-Opa, a small winged ship, across eight bright stages set in the Fantasy Zone star system. Unlike most shooters of the era, each stage scrolls freely left and right â the goal is not to reach the end of a level but to hunt down and destroy every enemy base scattered across it, then face the boss that appears once all bases are cleared.
How to play
Fly left and right across the stage, shooting enemies and destroying all marked bases. Defeated enemies drop coins, and a shop vessel flies through periodically â stop at it to spend your coins on upgrades: faster engines, heavier bombs, wider shots, or a laser. Clear every base to trigger the boss fight; defeat the boss and move to the next stage.
Keyboard controls (Player 1):
- Arrow keys â move Opa-Opa
- X â fire (A button)
- Z â drop bomb (B button)
- Enter â Start
- Shift â Select
Tips
- Upgrade the engine early. The default speed is slow; a faster engine makes dodging enemy fire and reaching distant bases much easier.
- Target bases, not waves. Enemy spawns are endless until every base is destroyed â go for bases over general enemies to reach the boss faster.
- Save coins for the shop. The heavy bomb and twin missiles are the most effective weapons against bosses; hold your coins back rather than spending them on minor upgrades.
