Eien no Filena (also known as Eternal Filena) is a 1995 role-playing game released for the SNES by Tokuma Shoten. Based on Takeshi Shudo’s light novels, this story-driven RPG follows Filena, a young woman raised as a male gladiator to survive in the harsh Empire of Doris. Together with her companion Lila, she embarks on a quest for freedom that tackles surprisingly mature themes for the 16-bit era.

How to Play

Navigate the world, talk to characters, and engage in traditional turn-based combat with a unique twist. The game features a battle system where characters can equip and swap between three different weapons on the fly, changing their available skills and spells to exploit enemy weaknesses. Use the Arrow Keys to move, Z to confirm or interact, X to cancel, and Enter to open the menu or pause.

Tips

• Unlike most RPGs of its time, you save your progress using a specific item in your inventory rather than looking for save points.
• During your early encounters at the training academy, use the flying ripper followed by the valiant knife to quickly defeat Zena.
