Game description:

Deja Vu is a classic point-and-click adventure game, originally developed by ICOM Simulations and ported to the NES in 1990. This Japanese release retains the hardboiled detective atmosphere of the original as you wake up in a bathroom stall with amnesia and a dead body nearby. Set in 1941 Chicago, the game tasks you with navigating a complex murder mystery where you must gather evidence, uncover your own identity as Ace Harding, and clear your name before the police or mobsters catch up to you.

How to Play

Your objective is to explore the city, collect items, and piece together the mystery using a menu-based command system (such as Examine, Speak, and Take). Move your cursor to interact with the environment and manage your inventory to solve puzzles. You can play using the standard NES controls mapped to your keyboard: use the Arrow Keys to move the cursor, Z and X for the A and B buttons to interact and cancel, and Enter/Shift for Start and Select.

Tips

  • Be mindful of your money. You need coins to pay for cab rides between locations; if you run out, you will be unable to travel safely.
  • Inventory management is critical. Keep the mugger’s gun for self-defense, but make sure to dispose of the actual murder weapon to avoid being framed.
  • Take the time to examine everything and use the addresses you find to unlock new travel destinations on your map.
