Pootan is a 1982 arcade bootleg of Konami’s classic fixed shooter, Pooyan. In this game, players control Mama Pig as she rides an elevator basket up and down the side of a cliff, using a bow and arrow to defend her piglets from packs of balloon-riding wolves. It faithfully recreates the original’s frantic, vertically-oriented gallery shooting action.
How to Play
The objective is to pop the balloons of descending wolves before they reach the ground (in the first stage) or before they reach the top of the cliff (in the second stage). If wolves land successfully, they will bite Mama Pig or eventually form a ladder to reach her.
Controls: Use the Arrow Keys to move the elevator basket up and down, and press Z or X to shoot arrows. You can also pick up special meat items that act as a projectile to knock out multiple wolves at once.
Tips
- Meat items are incredibly powerful. Wait until multiple wolves are lined up vertically before throwing the meat to maximize your score and clear the screen quickly.
- In the second stage, prioritize the wolves that are closest to the top of the screen, as they only need a short distance to push the boulder.
- Arrows travel somewhat slowly, so aim carefully and try to lead your targets instead of just holding the fire button.
