Choplifter (Japan) (Proto) is a side-scrolling action game that brings the classic hostage-rescue gameplay to the Sega Master System. Originally developed by Dan Gorlin for Broderbund, this early 1985 prototype version tasks players with piloting a combat helicopter into hostile territory. You must carefully navigate enemy airspace, avoid incoming fire from jets and anti-aircraft guns, and safely transport stranded captives back to your home base.
How to Play
Your main objective is to rescue a set number of hostages in each level. Fly your helicopter over the enemy barracks to blast them open, then land carefully to allow the escaping captives to board. Be cautious not to crush them when landing or accidentally shoot them during crossfire. Once your chopper is full, return to your base to drop them off and head back out to rescue the rest. The default Sega Master System controls are the D-pad (arrow keys) to move and angle your helicopter, A/B (Z/X keys) to fire your weapons, and Enter to start.
Tips
- Watch your angle: Your helicopter’s facing direction determines where you shoot. Tilt forward to fire at ground targets like tanks and barracks.
- Land carefully: Hostages are vulnerable. Ensure the landing zone is clear of enemies before touching down, and don’t land directly on the people you’re trying to save.
- Prioritize survival over full loads: If your chopper takes heavy fire, it’s often safer to return to base with a partial load of hostages rather than risking a crash and losing everyone on board.
