Chain Reaction is the 1995 international arcade release of Data East’s fast-paced puzzle game, originally known in Japan as Magical Drop. As a competitive tile-matching game, players control a character at the bottom of the screen, rapidly pulling and throwing colored balloons to clear the board and trigger massive chain reactions against their opponent.
How to Play
The objective is to clear your screen of colored drops while preventing them from reaching the bottom. In the browser arcade emulator, use the Arrow Keys to move left and right. Press Z to grab drops from the column above you (you can hold multiple drops of the same color at once), and press X to throw them back up. Connect three or more of the same color vertically to clear them and send penalty drops to your opponent.
Tips
- Keep an eye out for special item drops, like the Bomb drop that destroys surrounding pieces, to get out of dangerous situations.
- Don’t just clear lines one by one; pull drops strategically and wait for the right moment to throw them back up to create chain reactions.
- You can continuously grab and throw drops while a chain reaction is actively resolving on screen to build your combo multiplier even higher.
