Game description:

Brain Drain (Japan) is a 1998 Game Boy puzzle game developed by Visual Impact and published by Acclaim, released in Japan on July 31, 1998 (it had reached North America that March). Each level shows a target pattern of symbols — things like apples or hearts — in the corner of the screen, while the main play field holds the same symbols scrambled into a random arrangement. The player moves a frame around the field that encloses a 2×2 block of four symbols; pressing the action button rotates those four symbols clockwise around the frame. Matching the target pattern before the timer runs out clears the level.

How to Play

Use the arrow keys to slide the frame over any four adjacent symbols, then press Z to rotate them clockwise, gradually reshaping the scrambled field into the target pattern shown in the corner. Press Enter to start and Shift for menu/select. Beyond the standard mode, Brain Drain also has a Brain Race mode, where the goal is to clear a set number of levels as fast as possible rather than beating an individual timer.

Tips

Later levels raise the difficulty by hiding some of the symbols or reversing the controls, so it pays to memorize the target pattern completely before those levels start rather than relying on glancing at it mid-solve. Because each rotation moves all four symbols in the frame at once, look a couple of moves ahead so your last rotation finishes two matches instead of just one.
