Avenging Spirit is a 1992 action-platformer developed by C.P. Brain for the Game Boy. Players control the ghost of a murdered young man who is summoned back by a scientist to save his kidnapped girlfriend from a crime syndicate. Unlike a standard platformer, your character lacks physical form and must possess the bodies of enemy characters to traverse levels and fight the syndicate.
How to play
As a ghost, your energy rapidly depletes when you are outside of a host body. To survive, you must possess an enemy character to inherit their unique attacks, speed, and jumping abilities. Your objective is to fight through six stages to reach the syndicate bosses.
Controls: Use the Arrow Keys (D-pad) to move, Z (A) to jump, and X (B) to attack. Press X while hovering outside a body to possess a nearby enemy. Use Enter for Start and Shift for Select.
Tips
- Your ghost energy only drains when you are outside a host; however, taking damage while possessing an enemy will deplete the host’s health, eventually forcing you out.
- Try out different hosts: some have ranged weapons like guns, while others rely on powerful melee attacks or have superior jumping abilities.
- Search the levels for three hidden keys. Finding all of them is required to unlock the true ending and fully rescue your girlfriend.
