Sengoku Ninja-kun is an overhead action-adventure game released for the Game Boy in 1991 by UPL and NMK. Later localized in North America as Ninja Taro, this title trades the traditional arcade platforming of the Ninja-kun series for a top-down exploration style reminiscent of early The Legend of Zelda games. Set in feudal Japan, you guide Ninja-kun across an overworld map, battling enemies, completing quests for townspeople, and delving into caves to defeat bosses in a quest to restore peace.
How to Play
Your objective is to explore the world, find treasure chests to improve your character’s strength, and defeat enemy forces using your sword and shurikens. You can play directly in your browser using the default Game Boy controls:
- Move: Arrow keys
- Attack / Confirm: Z
- Secondary Item / Cancel: X
- Pause / Menu: Enter
- Select: Shift
Tips
- Battle for Upgrades: Enemies can drop weapons and items when defeated. Taking the time to battle foes rather than running past them is key to powering up.
- Explore Thoroughly: Without a traditional currency system, your character’s progression relies heavily on finding the treasure chests scattered throughout the overworld and within caves.
- Speak to Everyone: Your journey forward is often tied to completing specific requests for the local townspeople, making it essential to interact with every NPC you encounter.
