Game description:

Reunite the penguin lovers Gurin and Malon in Binary Land, a classic puzzle-maze game released by Hudson Soft for the NES in 1985. The unique twist is that you control both penguins simultaneously: moving the D-pad moves both characters, but their horizontal movements are mirrored. You must navigate them through a top-down labyrinth, avoid enemies like spiders and birds, and meet at the caged heart at the top of the screen before time runs out.

How to Play

Your objective is to guide both penguins to the top center of the maze to unlock the heart. The primary challenge is that moving left makes Gurin go left while Malon goes right. You must carefully use the walls of the maze to align them. Defend yourself by using the A or B button to shoot a spray that defeats enemies and destroys cobwebs blocking your path. For the browser emulator, the default NES controls apply: use the arrow keys to move, Z or X to shoot, and Enter for Start.

Tips for Success

  • Use the walls: If one penguin is blocked by a wall, moving in that direction will only move the other penguin. Use this technique to intentionally offset them and navigate tricky asymmetrical sections of the maze.
  • Beware the cobwebs: Spiders will constantly spin new webs. Clear them out quickly with your spray before you get trapped, but remember that shooting leaves you briefly stationary.
  • Stay close together: Try to keep Gurin and Malon relatively close. If they are too far apart, it becomes much harder to manage their mirrored movements and react to enemies on both sides of the screen.
