Originally hitting arcades in 1980 and later ported to DOS, Battlezone by Atari, Inc. is one of the earliest first-person shooters. You pilot a hover tank across a desolate landscape, hunting down enemy tanks, guided missiles, and UFOs before they can destroy you.
How to play
Your objective is to survive as long as possible and earn a high score by eliminating hostile targets. Use the radar display at the top of the screen to track enemy armor before it enters your line of sight. Because DOS keyboard mappings can vary, test your standard movement keys (often arrow keys or numpad) and spacebar for firing when the simulation starts.
Tips
- Enemies often predict your movement and shoot where you are heading. Change direction abruptly when an enemy fires to dodge their shot.
- Use the geometric blocks and pyramids scattered across the battlefield as cover to shield yourself from incoming fire.
