Aurail is an arcade shoot ’em up developed by Westone and published by Sega in 1990. Running on the System 16B hardware, players pilot a versatile tank mecha through alternating gameplay styles, battling across eight-directional top-down stages and fast-paced first-person tunnel segments. Never ported to home consoles, it remains a challenging and distinctive piece of Sega’s arcade history.
How to Play
Control your mecha using the Arrow Keys to move. Use the Z, X, and C keys (acting as your arcade buttons) to shoot, deploy your remote drone, and activate your shield. In the top-down stages, tapping the fire button lets you move and shoot, while holding it locks your position for continuous auto-fire. In the first-person tunnel sections, you can move and auto-fire at the same time.
Tips
- Collect power orbs to stack up to three layers of shielding, which is crucial for surviving dense enemy bullet patterns.
- Look out for the “D” power-up to summon a robotic drone companion that provides valuable extra firepower.
- Master the stationary auto-fire lockโuse it to quickly burn down tougher enemies when you have a safe position, but tap fire to stay mobile when swarmed.
