Game description:

Atomic Robo-Kid is a unique free-scrolling shoot ’em up and platformer hybrid, developed by UPL and released for the arcade in 1988. Unlike traditional scrolling shooters, you pilot a heavily armed robotic kid who can both walk along the terrain and fly freely through the maze-like levels. The game stands out for its methodical pace, exploration elements, and branching paths, letting you carefully navigate through stages filled with hostile mutants and towering mechanical bosses.

How to play

Your objective is to explore the labyrinthine alien environments, defeat bosses, and survive to the end of each stage. You can collect weapon power-ups from defeated enemies, allowing you to switch between different weapon types like spread shots, homing missiles, and concentrated lasers on the fly. Since this is an arcade game, you will need to insert virtual coins before you can start.

  • Insert Coin / Start: Use the default emulator keys (often Shift or 5 for Coin, and Enter or 1 for Start).
  • Movement: Arrow Keys (Up, Down, Left, Right).
  • Shoot / Change Weapon: Z, X, or C (default emulator action buttons).

Tips

  • Conserve your shield: You start with a limited shield that protects against one hit. Take your time to peek around corners rather than rushing into new areas.
  • Choose the right weapon: The homing missiles are excellent for taking out enemies in tight corridors where you can’t get a direct line of sight.
  • Watch your flight: Flying gives you freedom of movement but can make you a larger target. Sometimes walking along the ground makes it easier to dodge overhead fire.
