ASO: Armored Scrum Object (also known as Alpha Mission in the West) is a vertical-scrolling shooter developed by SNK and released for the NES in 1986. Players pilot the Syd fighter craft, battling through futuristic stages while collecting power-ups. What sets the game apart from typical shooters of its era is its unique armor system; you can collect various lettered pieces to form specialized armored suits, offering powerful new weapons like laser beams, homing missiles, and shields that draw from an energy gauge.
How to Play
The objective is to survive waves of enemies, defeat the boss at the end of each stage, and manage your armor energy efficiently. Using the default NES web controls, move your ship with the Arrow keys. Fire your primary weapons with Z. The X button is used to activate your equipped armor suit and fire its special weapon. Use Enter to start or pause the game, and Shift (Select) to choose your armor on the selection screen.
Tips
- Be careful when collecting lettered power-ups; while many upgrade your speed or weapons, some will downgrade your ship or drain your energy.
- Save your armor energy for bosses or overwhelming sections, as it drains steadily while the armor is active and every time you fire its weapon.
- Ground targets can only be destroyed with your missiles, so prioritize taking them out to uncover hidden power-ups and armor pieces.
