Antarctic Adventure is a third-person scrolling action game released by Konami in 1983 for the NES. You play as a small penguin racing across the Antarctic ice sheet to reach a series of research bases before time runs out. The receding-track perspective was unusual for 1983, and Konami’s tight pace makes it easy to lose a half-hour chasing a cleaner run.
How to play
Your penguin runs forward automatically — steer left and right with the arrow keys to weave around obstacles. Press Z (NES B button) to jump over hazards you cannot sidestep. Each stage ends when you reach the next base; if the timer hits zero before you arrive, you lose a life. Ice holes open with little warning, penguins and seals block the path, and low-flying birds swoop in from the sides. Fish scattered along the route add bonus points — collect them when the line is safe.
Tips
- Stay near the centre of the track so you have room to react in either direction; drifting to an edge cuts off your escape route when two obstacles arrive together.
- Watch ahead, not at your penguin’s feet — ice holes are fast and jumping at the last frame rarely works. Reading the path a beat early makes the difference.
- Fish are bonus score, not required. If claiming one would force a line through a seal or hole, let it go and bank the time instead.
