Big Challenge! Juudou Senshuken is a pioneering judo simulation developed and published by Jaleco for the Famicom Disk System in 1988. As the first entry in Jaleco’s “Big Challenge” sports series, it attempts to translate the complex mechanics of competitive judo into a one-on-one fighting format. Rather than relying on simple button mashing, the gameplay emphasizes a push-and-pull system where you must break your opponent’s balance to successfully execute throws and transition into ground grappling (newaza) to score an Ippon.
How to Play
The objective is to defeat your opponent by scoring points through successful throws and holds before time runs out. In your browser, the default NES controls apply: use the Arrow Keys (D-pad) to maneuver and manage footwork, Z / X (A/B buttons) to grip and initiate attacks, and Enter / Shift (Start/Select) to pause or make menu selections.
Tips
- Manage your grip: Don’t try to throw immediately. Use directional movement to push and pull your opponent first, breaking their balance to ensure your throw connects.
- Master ground grappling: If a throw doesn’t result in an immediate win, be prepared to engage in the ground-grappling system to secure a hold and finish the match.
