Released in 1989 for the NES, To the Earth is a notoriously difficult first-person light gun shooter. As a space pilot on a mission to deliver a cure to your home planet, you must defend your spacecraft against a relentless alien onslaught as you travel through the solar system. The game was originally designed for the NES Zapper, requiring lightning-fast reflexes and strict accuracy to survive some of the most unforgiving enemy waves on the console.
How to play
Your objective is to shoot down incoming alien fighters, missiles, and asteroids while protecting your ship from taking damage. In this browser version, the NES Zapper is mapped to your mouseโsimply point and left-click to fire. The game is extremely fast-paced, so you will likely need to memorize enemy flight patterns to anticipate where they will appear.
Tips
- Accuracy is survival: Your ship’s shield gauge also acts as your ammunition. Every time you miss a shot, your health depletes, while successfully destroying enemies helps restore it. Never fire wildly.
- Strategic avoidance: Because missing costs you health, it is often safer to let fast, difficult-to-hit enemies fly past rather than risking a missed shot.
- Use your bombs: If you successfully hit multiple enemies in a row while at full health, you can earn a Smart Bomb to clear the screen of immediate threats.
