Super Metroid: Control Freak is a popular quality-of-life ROM hack of the genre-defining action-adventure game, originally developed by Nintendo for the SNES. Created by modder Kejardon, this hack targets one of the few criticisms of the original 1994 masterpiece: its rigid control scheme. It rewrites the input system to allow for fully separate button mapping, letting you split diagonal aiming, item selection, and weapon toggles onto individual buttons for a much smoother and more modern experience.

How to Play

You control bounty hunter Samus Aran as she explores the hostile alien planet Zebes to recover a stolen Metroid. This hack allows you to jump into the in-game options menu and bind your controls exactly how you prefer. By default for SNES games in the browser, you use the Arrow Keys to move, Z and X for primary actions (typically jump and shoot), A and S for shoulder buttons (aiming), and Enter for Start to access the map and loadout. Take a moment before starting your run to remap your aiming and item selection to fit your playstyle.

Tips for Control Freak

• Map item cancel: One of the best benefits of this hack is mapping “Item Cancel” to a dedicated button, so you don’t have to cycle all the way through your weapons to deselect Super Missiles.
• Wall jumping is unchanged: The hack modifies button mappings but preserves the original physics. You still need to spin jump against a wall and press the opposite direction right before pressing jump to scale shafts.
• Use separate aiming: Map aiming up and aiming down to the shoulder buttons to run and gun diagonally with much greater precision than the original setup allowed.
