1943: Midway Kaisen (the Japanese release of 1943: The Battle of Midway) is a classic 1987 vertical shoot ’em up developed by Capcom for the arcade. Players pilot a P-38 Lightning across 16 stages of intense aerial combat. Unlike many traditional shooters of the era, the game replaces one-hit deaths with an energy meter that ticks down over time and depletes when taking damage, adding a resource management element to the frantic action.

How to Play

The objective is to survive each stage by shooting down waves of enemy aircraft and destroying the large battleship or bomber boss at the end. Arcade controls in the browser map the joystick to the arrow keys, with the main attack on the Z key and the evasive loop-the-loop maneuver on the X key (which consumes a small amount of energy). Tips

• Your energy meter acts as both your health and your timer. Prioritize collecting energy power-ups (the “E” icons) to keep your run alive.
