Game description:

1943 – The Battle of Valhalla is the Japanese Famicom version of Capcom’s acclaimed 1988 vertical-scrolling shoot-’em-up, known elsewhere as 1943: The Battle of Midway. A direct sequel to 1942, this port brings the intense arcade action to the NES hardware with expanded content, challenging you to pilot a P-38 Lightning over the Pacific. Distinct from traditional shooters of the era, this entry introduces an innovative energy gauge that constantly drains and acts as both your health and fuel.

How to Play

Your objective is to survive waves of enemy fighters and destroy massive boss battleships at the end of each stage. In the browser, use the Arrow Keys to maneuver your P-38 Lightning. Press Z to fire your primary weapons and X to unleash a screen-clearing lightning attack or loop-the-loop maneuver, which consumes a portion of your energy gauge. Press Enter to begin.

Tips

  • Manage your energy: Your energy meter is both health and fuel, constantly draining as you fly. Firing your special attack also costs energy, so use it only when completely overwhelmed.
  • Cycle your power-ups: Destroying formations of red enemy planes reveals power-up icons. Shooting a power-up cycles it through different weapons, such as the spread-firing shotgun or the powerful laser.
  • Prioritize energy recovery: Certain power-ups replenish your energy. Grabbing these is essential for surviving the game’s longer, grueling missions.
