Yu-Gi-Oh! Duel Monsters is a Game Boy card-battling game that Konami Computer Entertainment Shinjuku developed and Konami published in Japan on December 16, 1998, as the first video game based on the Duel Monsters trading card game from the manga and anime. It never had an official English release — Dark Duel Stories became the series’ first international outing in 2002 — so this version is a fan translation of the original Japanese cartridge.
How to Play
You start with a 40-card Starter Deck made up of seven fixed Magic Cards plus 33 Monster Cards drawn at random from a pool of 100, then duel opposing characters by summoning monsters and playing Magic Cards to whittle their Life Points down to zero. A duel also ends instantly if your opponent must draw from an empty deck, or if you assemble all five pieces of Exodia in your hand. Beat each stage’s characters five times to advance to the next stage, working through a full card pool of 365 cards, 15 of which are secret.
Controls: Arrow Keys to move the cursor and navigate menus, Z to confirm or select, X to cancel or go back, Enter for Start, and Shift for Select.
Tips
Characters you’ve already beaten five times can still be challenged again, and rematching them keeps handing out new cards, so revisiting old opponents is the most reliable way to round out your card pool instead of only pushing forward through the stages.
