Game description:

Developed by Westone and released in 1989 for the Sega Master System, Wonder Boy III: The Dragon’s Trap is an ambitious action-RPG and early pioneer of the “Metroidvania” genre. After being cursed by the Mecha Dragon, you are stripped of your human form and must explore a vast, interconnected world to defeat other dragons and break the spell. What makes the game distinctive is its transformation mechanic: defeating each boss turns you into a different creature, such as the wall-climbing Mouse-Man, the underwater-swimming Piranha-Man, or the flying Hawk-Man. Each new form unlocks previously inaccessible areas of the map, demanding constant exploration and backtracking to uncover secrets.

How to Play

Your objective is to traverse the interconnected environments, upgrade your equipment, and defeat the vampire dragons to lift your curse. For the Sega Master System emulator in your browser, movement is handled with the arrow keys. Use the Z key to jump and the X key to attack with your current weapon or ability. Press Enter to access the pause menu, where you can switch your active sub-weapons and armor.

Tips for The Dragon’s Trap

  • As Mouse-Man, look for checkered blocks, which you can climb and walk upside down on to bypass obstacles.
  • Don’t ignore the shopkeepers; upgrading your sword, shield, and armor is essential for surviving later areas, as your defense is tied to your equipment rather than your form.
  • Keep a close eye on your charm points (CP), as certain powerful items in shops will only be sold to you if your CP is high enough. You can increase CP by finding charm stones or equipping specific gear.
