Wings of Wor is a challenging horizontal shoot ’em up released for the Sega Genesis in 1991. Known as Gynoug in Japan, the game puts you in control of Wor, a heavily armed angel fighting to defend the heavens from a grotesque mutant uprising led by The Destroyer. It stands out in the Genesis library for its striking, biomechanical art style, intense pacing, and massive, screen-filling boss encounters.
How to Play
Your objective is to survive waves of nightmarish enemies and defeat the boss at the end of each of the game’s six stages. Use the D-pad (arrow keys) to fly and maneuver around enemy fire. Press A or C (Z or C key) to fire your primary shot, and B (X key) to unleash your equipped magic spell. Collecting red or blue feathers will change and upgrade your main weapon’s spread and power, while grabbing magic scrolls grants you powerful screen-clearing attacks or defensive shields.
Tips
- Pay attention to the magic scrolls before you collect them; their letters change, allowing you to select the spell that best fits your playstyle, such as the homing lightning or protective energy ring.
- Since Wor has a large hitbox and the screen can get extremely crowded, focus your eyes on your character rather than the enemies to weave through tight bullet patterns.
