Developed by Miroslav Němeček and published by Golem in 1993, Vlak is a classic DOS puzzle game that became a freeware staple. It takes the familiar concept of Snake and applies it to a locomotive: as you steer your train around the screen to collect items, train cars attach to the back, forcing you to carefully navigate an ever-growing tail.
How to play
Your objective across the game’s 50 levels is to pick up every item on the board. Each item you collect adds a wagon to your train, making it longer and more difficult to maneuver in tight spaces. Once you have cleared all the items, the exit doors will open, allowing you to drive through to the next stage. Use the arrow keys to steer your locomotive, and be careful not to crash into the walls or your own train cars.
Tips
- Plan your route: Since your train grows with every item, try to collect them in an order that leaves you a clear, wide path to the exit door.
- Clear tight spaces early: Entering narrow corridors when your train is long is a quick way to trap yourself. Pick up items in confined areas first while your train is still short.
