Virtual Wars is a 1994 action platformer for the Game Boy, developed by The Sales Curve. Released in the West as The Lawnmower Man, this Japanese version retains the same core run-and-gun gameplay. You play as either Dr. Angelo or Carla, navigating side-scrolling stages and tackling pseudo-3D “Cyber Run” sections as you battle through virtual reality to stop Jobe.
How to Play
Your objective is to survive the platforming stages and virtual reality sequences, defeating enemies and bosses along the way. Use the D-pad (Arrow keys) to move and duck, the A button (Z key) to jump, and the B button (X key) to shoot your weapon. Press Start (Enter) to pause.
Gameplay Tips
- Collect Data Discs: Grab the floating data discs scattered throughout the levels. Collecting enough of them grants you the Virtual Suit, which allows you to absorb one free hit from an enemy without losing a life.
- Learn the Cyber Runs: The 3D connector stages rely heavily on inertia and memorization. Focus on learning the movement patterns to avoid obstacles, as quick reactions alone often aren’t enough.
- Weapon Upgrades: Keep an eye out for weapon drops to upgrade your firepower, which is essential for taking down the game’s tougher bosses.
