Turbo OutRun: Coast-to-Coast Racing
Turbo OutRun is a classic arcade racing game released by Sega in 1989. Serving as the direct sequel to the original OutRun, players once again get behind the wheel, this time driving a Ferrari F40 for a high-speed journey across the United States. Instead of branching paths, the game features a linear route from New York to Los Angeles, racing against an AI opponent in a Porsche 959 while weaving through traffic, varying weather conditions, and navigating challenging turns.
How to play
As an arcade racer, the objective is to reach the next checkpoint before the time limit expires. Control your vehicle using the directional keys to steer, with buttons dedicated to accelerating, braking, and shifting gears (Low and High). A key addition in this sequel is the “Turbo” boost, which can be activated to drastically increase top speed for short bursts. However, keep an eye on your engine temperature gauge on the dashboard to avoid overheating.
Tips
- Use the turbo boost primarily on long, straight sections of the road to maximize your speed without risking a crash. Wait for the engine temperature gauge to drop before using it again.
- When approaching sharp corners or heavy traffic, manually downshift to Low gear instead of relying solely on brakes; it helps maintain better control and allows for faster acceleration out of the turn.
