Game description:

Transformers: The Mystery of Comvoy (Transformers: Convoy no Nazo) is an infamous 1986 action-platformer originally released for the Famicom in Japan. Starring Ultra Magnus, the game follows his solitary mission through Decepticon territory to uncover the truth behind the death of Optimus Prime (known as Convoy in Japan). It is widely known among retro gaming communities for its punishing difficulty, unpredictable enemy patterns, and one-hit death mechanics. This version features the English translation patch by Stardust Crusaders, making the title screen and ending accessible to English speakers.

How to Play

The objective is to navigate fast-paced side-scrolling and vertical platforming stages, defeat Decepticon bosses, and collect letters that spell out the mysteries of the plot. As an NES game, the controls map to the standard layout: use the arrow keys to move (D-pad), Z to jump (A button), and X to shoot (B button), with Enter for Start. You can transform Ultra Magnus into his semi-truck mode by pressing down, which is essential for dodging high-flying attacks and navigating tight corridors.

Tips

  • Ultra Magnus can transform into a semi-truck by pressing Down on the D-pad (Down arrow). This mode drastically reduces your hitbox, making it much easier to dodge the nearly invisible enemy bullets.
  • The game features a warping system. Look for hidden warp zones that let you skip levels by shooting at specific empty spaces to reveal icons; this is almost mandatory to avoid losing all your lives in the brutal later stages.
  • Watch out for the small, low-flying jets that appear from the edges of the screenโ€”they often spawn at exactly your jump height and are responsible for many unexpected deaths.
