Game description:

Developed by Capcom in 1989, Destiny of an Emperor is a distinctive strategy role-playing game for the NES that adapts the classic Three Kingdoms period of Chinese history. Unlike traditional RPGs, your party consists of historical generals like Liu Bei and Guan Yu, and your health is represented by the number of troops each commander leads into battle.

How to Play

Recruit generals, manage your provisions, and conquer rival warlords to unite China under the Shu Han banner. In the browser emulator, use the Arrow Keys for the D-pad to explore and navigate menus, Z and X for the A and B buttons, and Enter and Shift for Start and Select.

Tips

  • Always stock up on provisions before leaving town; running out of food on the overworld map will rapidly deplete your troops’ numbers as you walk.
  • Generals with high intelligence (like Zhuge Liang later in the game) are best suited for using Tactics, which function like magic spells and can devastate enemy forces.
  • After defeating enemy generals, you can often recruit them into your army. If they refuse to join immediately, try bribing them with gold or a steed.
