Toy Story 2: Buzz Lightyear to the Rescue! is a classic 1999 3D platformer developed by Traveller’s Tales for the Nintendo 64. Based on the beloved Pixar film, players control Buzz Lightyear as he explores massive, household-themed environments to rescue Woody from Al McWhiggin. Known for its ambitious level design, catchy soundtrack, and tight platforming mechanics, it stands out as one of the best movie tie-in games of its era.
How to play
Your main objective in each level is to collect Pizza Planet tokens by completing various tasks, such as defeating bosses, solving environmental puzzles, finding lost items, or collecting 50 coins for Hamm. For the Nintendo 64, move Buzz with the analog stick and press the A button to jump (press it twice in mid-air to double jump). Press the B button to fire your wrist laser, and use Z or R to aim your shots manually. The C-buttons allow you to adjust the camera and get a better view of the giant environments around you.
Tips
- Use Charged Shots: Hold down the fire button to charge your laser. This powerful attack is especially effective against bosses and shielded enemies.
- Backtrack for Tokens: You cannot collect every Pizza Planet token on your first visit to a level. You will need to return to earlier stages once you unlock Buzz’s permanent power-ups, such as the grappling hook or hover boots.
- Find Mr. Potato Head: Look for Mr. Potato Head in each level; retrieving his missing parts will unlock those essential new abilities.
