Game description:

Top Racer is a fast-paced, arcade-style racing game released for the SNES in 1992 by Kemco and Gremlin Graphics. Best known outside of Japan as Top Gear, it challenges you to race across eight different countries, navigating sharp turns and avoiding road debris. You choose from four distinct cars, each with unique attributes for top speed, acceleration, tire grip, and fuel consumption, requiring careful strategy to secure first place in the championship.

How to play

The objective is to qualify in each race to advance to the next track. During races, you must manage your fuel and decide when to use your limited nitro boosts or pull into the pit lane. The standard SNES controls use the D-pad to steer, B to accelerate, Y to brake, A for nitro, and L/R to shift gears (if using manual transmission). In the browser, these typically map to the arrow keys to steer, X to accelerate, A to brake, Z for nitro, and S/D to shift.

Tips

  • Keep an eye on your fuel gauge. Running out of gas means an automatic disqualification, so use the pit stops when necessary, especially on longer tracks.
  • Save your nitro boosts for long straightaways to maximize their effectiveness, or use them to quickly recover speed after a crash.
  • Choosing the right car is crucial. The white car offers excellent fuel efficiency, reducing the need for pit stops, while the red car boasts the highest top speed but consumes fuel rapidly.
