Thunder Force II is a multi-directional scrolling shooter developed and published by Technosoft for the Sega Genesis in 1988. One of the console’s earliest third-party titles, it puts you in the cockpit of the FIRE LEO-02 Exceliza as you battle through the Orn Empire across two distinct play modes: free-roaming top-down stages where you must locate and destroy every enemy base scattered across a large map, and faster, more intense side-scrolling stages filled with enemy waves and end-of-sequence bosses.
How to play
Move your ship with the arrow keys. Press X (Genesis B button) to fire your current weapon with auto-fire. Press S (Genesis A button) to cycle through your collected weapons. Press Enter to pause.
Weapon power-ups are scattered throughout each stage. As you collect them your arsenal grows to include twin shots, back fire, wave cannon, claw, and more. Collected weapons stay in your loadout until you lose a life, so cycle freely to match the weapon to the situation.
Tips
- The top-down stages give no indicator of where all enemy bases are hidden across the large map. Sweep methodically rather than charging forward â missing a base forces you to backtrack across already-cleared ground.
- Losing a life resets your weapon upgrades. In the side-scrolling stages, survival matters more than aggression; an unupgraded ship is significantly harder to play.
- The wave cannon is particularly effective in the tight corridors of side-scrolling stages, where its spread can catch multiple targets at once. Save it for those sections.
