Game description:

Tetris is a puzzle game that Bullet-Proof Software published for the Game Boy in 1989.

What to expect

The rules are simple to state and awkward to master, which is the whole appeal. It escalates by adding constraints rather than speed, so later stages ask you to plan several moves ahead. It weighs 32 kB — small enough that a slow connection is not an obstacle.

Context

Modest hardware and long battery life made the Game Boy the handheld that stuck, well past the point where rivals looked better on paper. A connected gamepad is picked up automatically; the keyboard mapping sits beside the player. By this point a cartridge could hold enough for real level progression, and the era’s games make a point of it.
