Game description:

Released by Tecmo in 1989 for the NES, Tecmo Bowl is an arcade-style American football game that redefined the sports genre on home consoles. As one of the first console titles to feature real NFL Players Association rosters, it brought star athletes directly into players' living rooms. The game strips away the complexities of real football, focusing instead on fast-paced, side-scrolling action and straightforward play-calling.

How to Play

Your objective is to lead your chosen team to victory through a simplified but highly competitive game of football. Before each snap, you select from four offensive or four defensive plays. On offense, the goal is to successfully advance the ball for first downs or touchdowns, while on defense, you aim to predict the offense's play to stop them in their tracks. Play using your browser with the default NES controls: map the directional pad to your Arrow Keys to move your player and navigate menus. Use Z for the A button (to select plays, pass, or cycle through receivers) and X for the B button (to snap the ball or dive tackle). Press Enter for Start and Shift for Select.

Tips

  • Predict the play: On defense, if you correctly select the exact same play the offense has chosen, your defensive line will instantly break through to sack the quarterback or tackle the runner for a massive loss.
  • Utilize star players: Some players have wildly unbalanced stats that you can exploit. Bo Jackson (Los Angeles) is famously fast and difficult to tackle, making him virtually unstoppable on outside running plays.
