Game description:

Super Real Darwin is a vertical scrolling shooter released for the Arcade in 1987 by Data East. Serving as the sequel to Darwin 4078, this unique shoot ’em up puts you in control of a “living” fighter ship that mutates into various forms by collecting power-ups known as “Evol”. Set against the backdrop of an invasion by the neighboring planet Cokyo, you must fight back using your constantly evolving ship, which changes both its appearance and weapon capabilities as you progress.

How to Play

Your objective is to pilot your biological ship through hostile territory, shooting down enemy forces while collecting “Evol” power-ups to trigger mutations. Since this is a classic arcade release, controls map to the standard layout: use the directional keys to move your ship around the screen, and the primary action buttons (often mapped to Z or X on your keyboard) to fire your weapons. Experiment with different ship forms to find the firepower that best suits each stage.

Tips for Success

  • Manage your evolutions: Different ship forms have distinct firing patterns and hitboxes. Sometimes, a smaller, less powerful form is better for dodging dense bullet patterns than a fully evolved, massive ship.
  • Prioritize Evol drops: Taking damage usually devolves your ship rather than destroying it instantly. Keep a steady supply of Evol power-ups on screen to quickly recover your forms if you take a hit.
