Developed by Irem and released as a launch title in 1991, Super R-Type brings the punishing difficulty and strategic gameplay of the arcade shoot ’em up series to the SNES. You pilot the R-9C spacecraft against the biomechanical Bydo Empire across seven grueling stages, navigating tight corridors and dodging relentless enemy fire.
How to play
Your objective is to survive the side-scrolling stages and defeat the massive boss at the end of each level. Default web browser controls for the SNES map the Arrow keys to movement, Z and X to your primary weapons and Force pod detachment, and Enter/Shift for Start and Select. Mastering the detachable Force pod is essential to your survival.
Tips
- Use the Force defensively: The Force pod absorbs standard enemy projectiles. Attach it to the rear of your ship when enemies ambush you from behind, or launch it forward to chew through enemies in tight spaces.
- Play cautiously: Super R-Type notoriously lacks mid-level checkpoints. If your ship is destroyed, you are sent all the way back to the beginning of the stage.
- Weaponise the slowdown: The game experiences significant slowdown when the screen is full of enemies and projectiles. Use these moments of reduced speed to carefully weave through dense bullet patterns.
