Game description:

Super Puyo Puyo is the 1993 Super Nintendo (SNES) port of Compile’s genre-defining arcade puzzle game. Featuring characters and charm from the Madou Monogatari RPG series, it tasks you with stacking and matching falling slime-like creatures called Puyos to clear your board while overwhelming your opponent. It introduces the intense, competitive chain-reaction mechanics that made the franchise a classic.

How to play

The objective is to clear Puyos by connecting four or more of the same color horizontally or vertically. Creating chain reactionsโ€”where clearing one set of Puyos causes others to fall into matching groupsโ€”sends clear “Nuisance Puyos” to your opponent’s board to block their moves.

Controls: Use the arrow keys to move the falling Puyos left, right, or down. Use the Z and X keys to rotate the pieces. Press Enter to pause the game.

Tips

  • Build chains, not just clears: Single clears won’t send much garbage to your opponent. Focus on setting up combos by leaving one “trigger” Puyo missing from a large connected group, then dropping the final piece to set off a chain reaction.
  • Keep the center clear: You lose immediately if the third column from the left reaches the very top of the screen. Keep this column clear of junk at all costs.
