Spyro the Dragon is a classic 3D platformer developed by Insomniac Games and released for the PlayStation. In this iconic collectathon, players control Spyro, a young purple dragon on a quest across the Dragon Realms to rescue his elders from the villainous Gnasty Gnorc. Notably, this Japanese version includes several distinct gameplay tweaks compared to the Western release, such as a modified camera system and a slower default movement speed.
How to Play
Your objective is to explore various hub worlds and realms to free dragons encased in crystal, recover stolen treasure, and retrieve dragon eggs. Spyro navigates these levels using his core abilities: breathing fire to defeat unarmored enemies, charging to break chests or defeat armored foes, and gliding to cross large gaps.
Default PlayStation Controls:
- D-pad: Move Spyro
- X: Jump (press again in mid-air to glide)
- Square: Charge attack
- Circle: Breathe fire
- Triangle: Look around / Center camera
- L2 / R2: Rotate camera left or right
Tips
- Pay attention to enemy types. Armored enemies cannot be burned and must be charged, while large enemies cannot be charged and must be roasted with fire.
- To maximize your glide distance, jump and wait until you reach the very peak of your arc before pressing jump again. You can also press Triangle mid-glide to drop straight down for precise landings.
- Sparx the dragonfly is your health indicator. He changes color from gold, to blue, to green as you take damage. Defeat small fodder animals like sheep or frogs to release butterflies, which Sparx will eat to restore his health.
