Sonic UMGZ (short for Underwater Marble Garden Zone) is a Sega Genesis ROM hack of Sonic the Hedgehog 3 & Knuckles created by TheInvisibleSun for the 2020 Sonic Hacking Contest. The game reimagines the classic Marble Garden Zone by completely submerging it underwater, challenging players to navigate the flooded ruins with new mechanics, updated palettes, and altered enemy placements featuring Caterkiller Juniors.
Because the entire level is underwater, you must constantly manage your air supply to survive. Look for breathable bubbles and bubble shields scattered throughout the flooded ruins to prevent drowning. For controls on the Sega Genesis web emulator, use the Arrow keys for the D-pad to move, Enter for Start, and A/S/D or Z/X/C for the action buttons to jump and use abilities.
Listen for the countdown: When the drowning music starts, immediately prioritize finding a large bubble or reaching the surface before your air runs out.
