Solaris is a first-person space combat game programmed by Doug Neubauer and published by Atari Corporation for the Atari 2600 in 1986. Considered one of the most technically ambitious titles ever made for the hardware, it sends you across a galactic map of dozens of sectors â fighting enemy ships, resupplying at friendly planets, and pushing toward the distant planet Solaris before your resources run dry.
How to play
The game alternates between two views. On the galactic map you choose which sector to enter next, tracking enemy concentrations and planning a route to Solaris. Inside a sector you engage enemy ships in real-time combat, shooting them down before they overwhelm you. Friendly planets scattered across the map restore fuel and shields â stopping at them is often what separates a completed run from a premature end. Sectors become harder as you progress deeper toward Solaris.
Arrow keys steer your ship; Spacebar fires. Additional controls: RESET â F12, SELECT â F11, Pause â Alt+P, black-and-white/color toggle â F2.
Tips
- Check the galactic map before every warp. Jumping into a heavily guarded sector without full shields burns resources fast â a detour to a friendly planet first is almost always the better trade.
- Keep moving in combat. Enemy ships target a stationary craft far more easily than one that is constantly repositioning.
- Even when fuel feels adequate, stop at friendly planets while you can â the sectors guarding Solaris leave little margin for running empty on approach.
