Game description:

Socrates is a straightforward, challenging chess program released for DOS in 1993 by MDI. Built around the highly regarded Socrates 3.0 engine by Don Daileyโ€”which later powered Electronic Arts’ Kasparov’s Gambitโ€”the game skips tutorials and extra features to focus entirely on providing a robust match for experienced players.

How to play

Standard chess rules apply. You can control the game using your mouse or the arrow keys to navigate the board and select pieces. Press Right Alt + Enter to toggle full-screen mode.

Tips

  • Play positionally: Early 90s chess engines like Socrates 3.0 excel at deep tactical calculations. To gain an advantage, try to steer the game into closed, strategic positions where older engines often struggle.
  • Take your time: With a no-frills interface, it is easy to rush. Treat it like a serious match, as the engine provides a strong challenge.
